Signature-II Motor

The Teres motor assembly is a complete, ready to use unit that requires no assembly or soldering. The Teres motor assembly includes:

  • assembled and tested controller card
  • Maxon RE-Max precision DC motor
  • heavy, lead weighted black anodized aluminum case
  • miniature stainless steel cones
  • Smart charger with a 7AH battery
  • wall transformer with cable (120v only)
  • optical sensor installed in 1/4" aluminum tubing
  • precision pulley for 1/2" wide tape
  • drive belt constructed from 1/2" mylar

Reliability & Serviceability
The Teres controller uses high a quality circuit board combined with surface mount technology for high reliability. The Teres controller has a lifetime warranty and will provide years of reliable service.

Although the Teres controller is innovative it remains relatively simple. All of the parts are industry standard and are readily available. A full parts list and the schematic circuit are provided. Using this information the controller can be easily repaired by any competent technician.

Use With Other Turntables
The Teres motor may be adapted to work with almost any turntable with excellent results. In fact almost a third of the Teres motors sold have been for use with non-Teres turntables. These turntables include Platine Verdier, VPI TNT, VPI Aries, VPI Scout, Thorens TD-160, Basis 2001, Bogdan Vivus, Bogdan Spiritus, and Progressive Engineering.

There are 3 requirements that must be met to use the Teres motor on a non-Teres turntable.

  1. A strobe disk roughly 6" in diameter must be attached to the bottom of the platter. An image (tif) of the strobe disk is available here.
  2. A small sensor mounted in a short length of 1/4" tubing must be placed 1-2 mm from the strobe disk. Typically this will require that a 1/4" hole be drilled in the base or plinth.
  3. The Teres motor is 4-1/2" tall which in many cases will require that the turntable be raised up to align the platter with the motor.
The Teres motor will work with a wide range of platter diameters. Because of the popularity of the Teres motor with Platine Verdier additional details and assistance are available for adaptation of the Teres motor to this turntable.
  Description
The Teres Audio signature III motor controller uses an innovative circuit that offers the sonic performance of a high quality fixed DC regulator and the convenience of automatic speed regulation. Both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM speeds are supported. This controller coupled with a Maxon precision DC motor, low inertia pulley and a heavy aluminum housing offers ease of use and state of the art sonic performance. Click here for reviews.

Signature II motor enhancements include regulator circuit enhancements a great sounding low intertia composite pulley and an improved clear mylar belt. The Signature II motor now comes standard with a battery supply.

Controller
The Teres controller has a unique circuit that quickly brings the platter up to the correct speed. However, after the platter has reached the proper speed the controller switches to a mode that can only change the output voltage a few millivolts per minute. This avoids hunting (constantly making small speed adjustments) that degrades sonic performance of typical automated DC controllers. Once locked in the Teres controller adjusts the speed only enough to compensate for the slow speed drift that occurs during operation. The Teres is best described as a self calibrating fixed DC regulator.

In addition to automatic speed control the Teres motor has some nice ergonomic features that make it a pleasure to use. Giving the platter a gentle push automatically starts the motor. Slowing the platters speed with your hand automatically shuts off the motor. If you happen to fall asleep during a late night listening session the motor will automatically shut off after 45 minutes. Changing speed from 33 to 45 RPM is done by simply holding down the pushbutton for 2 seconds.

Quality Regulator Circuit
The quality of the regulator used with a DC motor has a significant sonic effect. Listening evaluations have shown that even small modifications to the circuit are clearly audible. The Teres regulator circuit has been carefully optimized to provide the best possible sound.

The Teres regulator starts with a high performance regulator constructed from discreet components. This circuit offers far better performance than simple IC regulators that are more commonly used. For you technical types it consists of a precision current source feeding into a shunt regulator. The result is excellent immunity from input noise and extremely low dynamic impedance. This translates into better pitch stability and ultimately better sound.

Building on a capable regulator design the Teres regulator is implemented using only the highest quality components. Component selection was guided by careful listening evaluations where component differences could be reliably identified. This optimized regulator using, Black Gate capacitors, high quality film capacitors and low DCR inductors offers improvements in musicality that are not subtle.
